Echoes Of Desire

Boum! One little look, and… boum!
Charles Trenet/Ray Goetz

Yes, it’s me! The Albionic Man,

The human junkyard… now,

I have to scribble a few last words…

Allright darlin?

The last transit van from Venus arrived

At The Electric Laser Clinic, no problem.

Here we go again – no signal, and…boum!

Easy way trips in slow motion,

Echoes of desire and mod girls on scooters

Refresh your everyday revolution.

Storm the town hall, body and soul, baby.

We live in a world of shadows

But, encased in zodiac scaffolding,

She doesn’t care about life or anything.

Meanwhile, here at Thermo-Station Junction,

A full moon is obscured by cloud,

Banishing memories of extreme caution.

Her bare midriff is a diversion route in free-fall.

CafĂ©, gallery, theatre – stay connected, and… boum!

I wrote a new chapter, but did you notice?

A view of blue sky is an abrupt change in feel.

The studio is here – Allright sweetie?

Scary claims; pull handle, push door.

Spark outrage with this strange equipment.

Solutions without boundaries a speciality, and… boum!

Forget The Albionic Man, that backless loafer,

With his illegible scribbles.

We live in a world of shadows.

But she doesn’t care.

No, really… she doesn’t care,

She doesn’t care at all.

Not at all.

IN THE ZONE

Zone in

Take It Or Leave It

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

from/for A.C. Evans

Salvation. Oh, yes, I know I am a spiritual flaneur,
a damned poet and (eye roll) a 'lost poet' and
(eye roll) a 'lost soul'. To be damned is to be modern,
absolutely human once and for all. The human condition
evolves too fast yet the horizon of change is fear,
and the closer we are to the horizon the less we care
about rhyme or reason: blank verse for blank reason.

And that is why traditional models of perfectibility
or divine purpose can be seen as a promethean affront
to the established order or as a way of repossessing everything
stolen from us by the Enchanter, a neo-shamanistic antithesis
of enlightenment and salvation. I know the difference between
fact and fiction, between sleep and waking, between dream
and reality, between consciousness and the unconscious,

between inner and outer space. It is too late to get unreal,
grounding poetic practice in the ontological matrix
dissociates poetry from cultural-linguistic literary discourse,
from the dreary, enervating world of fake self-referential
experimentalists obsessed with all those innate processes
of inner integration and perspective. The poem itself appears
as a by-product of therapy, propaganda or entertainment.

As I penetrate the archaic heritage and the archetypal forest
of symbols, it is the compulsive activity of inspiration,
the process of self-discovery, that is the prime factor:
it is this that dissolves those artificial barriers between
the enigmatic sphinx and the ancient alchemists. Beauty
is invoked by the transformation of the material of creation;
the essence of my poetic practice is active imagination.

Only language remains. Everything depends on language.
Being is literally indefinable in extra-linguistic terms,
my creativity is an innate psycho-active phenomenon.
I write certain words across blank pages of empty space,
consign metaphysics to oblivion. What has this to do with
oblivion? What has this to do with me? Everything.
The closer we are to the horizon the less we care.

Unspeakable Elegy

There is only the unspeakable.

There is only the colour of dust.

The dust of our pasts.

The dust of future ages

- incarnations of anguish?

It matters not.

No, I will never deride

My unspeakable desires,

My unspeakable thoughts,

My unspeakable elegies.

- incarnations of the flesh?

It matters not.

I look at these words

And they burn with hatred.

They are devoid of belief,

Of any shred of humanity

- incarnations in the mind?

It matters not.

I write an elegy of pain

And it burns with despair.

An elegy for every victim who

Cannot live without pain.

- incarnations of suffering?

It matters not.

This is the dust of our fevers.

This is a time without embrace.

This is a time without open doors.

This is a time without questions.

Flickering light behind glass

Distant clouds of memory…

Questions, always questions…

They matter not.

Get Your Dream Ticket

Glow on the Go, Oh Darling! Pop! Fizz! Clink! Power Up!
Falling objects; tripped over a hashtag on my way in,
Oh yes the fun stuff happens, oh yes, oh yes.
Diverted Flight Centre, bring it on, bring it off, all makes and models,
Makes your blood run cold she said, very British.
See it for yourself down at the Art Deco Disco
I mean, seriously? When you got it flaunt it, as they say.
Former Rialto usherette from somewhere else
Ritzy dream ticket Violetta Eureka from Zonal Foundation Inc.,
Not one of your cute Mayfair Ladies (geddit?),
Takes shorthand, Mondrian dress, tres chic – nothing doing.
Hello silky I muttered as Violetta swam into view
It’s like free fall in here, no half measures
Have a good day, yeah?

Knockout shape, wow, that dress is really something.
Dumb down smarten up mix and match get the message
Dreaming scream queen and screaming ticket
Exploding all over the place (geddit?) obviously
Closing in like very glitzy ritzy do me favour Cold Sister,
Mondrian dress tres chic nothing doing.
Glow on the Go, Oh Darling! Pop! Fizz! Clink! Power Up!
This is a near-life experience, and you can keep it
Prone to exaggeration, zap your brain it’s easy here
At Alpha Loading Central night moves way out far out
We hear a mysterious ‘ping’ from the deep,
Way down in The Trench; change of destination.
And the bulb’s gone! Shrieked Violetta.

Stark reality, see the upside of everything
You like Mondrian? You take it seriously?
I mean seriously? Taboo fantastique what?
That stuff zaps my brain, said Violetta
With a dreamy, oneiric giggle.
It’s The Style, as we call it,
It’s the scaffolding of the world, get a grip.
Get a what? You want a what?
I don’t think so – dream on baby.
Now look it’s really something… even if you’re
Too butch to boogie, too boring to boogaloo, ha ha ha.
Right old knees up do me a favour. Shabby, sleazy,
And I’m too flabbergasted to fandango, I replied.
You’ve got vapour trails in your eyes, she said.
Glow on the Go, Oh Darling! Pop! Fizz! Clink! Power Up!
High fives!

News and mags, photocopies, inspire and entertain
Makes it easy! Facial attraction, oooh darling.
Pop! Fizz! Clink!
Before meeting the girls to relax we freeze events
Eyeline, headline, skyline, hemline,
Doors close. What’s hot right now?
Come rain come shine come on Missy Violetta,
Don’t miss your moment in the palace of crystals.
Vamp it up in velvet just because top of the world
Learn the lingo, can be a breeze, High fives! Power up!

Unknown Zone II

We’ll be asking why this unknown zone? Will it flip?
Station of doom sun-storms catalytic traces bring it on,
High cheek bones flaring nostrils hovering flowers,
Avant high-vis groove fashion, cheesy music;
A swishy style statement for underground spaces;
A world-class nightmare; a midnight vision, remote
And desolate. Here you can be a princess for 24 hours.

Quality service rumble décor white wall transit rogue showers,
Read the cards, read the runes, it’s a flagrant magnolia moment.
Love-tackle kick-up circus aesthetic riff-raff never cheap just
Luxury high end looks – that’s the plan; but too many kick-backs.
Exit now. Do join us next time for a very alarming incident
Or a big bold move and you didn’t cry, well done.

The action starts here – reverse Deja vu visage, flaming meadows,
Red bricks it’s definitely going to be a moment, or a game
Of who blinks first, how does that make you feel?

Thermal shock cathartic effect obscure vision,
Travel zodiac hall of fame but don’t fly too close.
Local flashy fashionista types too shy but still smiling.
Take one! Take two! Take off! Yeah, take off!
She won’t know – but we can bring you the latest stark reality;
Hard to handle down the plughole seems like only yesterday.
No bother no problem, agreed. You name it, demand more.
Funny hello and welcome no reward just tatty fag ends
See what I mean?

Dark feelings impossible to tell from body language,
Yeah good alright, yeah, yeah, automatic kiss, and so on.
Here’s a slippery globe-trotter in search of a new life
Or even now and then a cool closet penthouse encounter
With some dishy fella from one of our partner agencies.
It’s the best ever rampant get there and dance lark, and
Even more ways to wrap it up excruciating scene.
Then you wonder how this bizarre body-toning act plays
Skyline infinity vision. Something nice to tell us; virtuoso.
Go for it bring it on slip of the tongue sex it up hot wraps
High voltage next day service best of harmony.
Get it while it’s hot.

Mirror photo flash.
Up next – everyday gadgets from outer space,
No regrets, no more futile musings, no more points of disorder
Or acid frost. Superior specification stonking star babe sweet altitude.
Well move along there move along, huge uncertainty, high-heeled boots,
Overnight fresh exotic. We’re part of an international off balance
Ring-road nu-yu routine. Warning micro-cover up your lover’s sanctuary
Big screen machine here or there against the clock faster better,
I am the agent; no half measures quite a quirky backstory.
Silky soft, velvet smooth, strictly no hoopla!
Turn up the lights!  Ker-ching!

Somewhere Off Limits

Made in Hell, loved in Heaven
The eye of the storm is the jewel in the crown.
Within the hour we arrive at an inspiring destination,
No cloud, mist, or murk, just hungry love dramas
Here at the Bureau de Cringe in mega-topia
Luxury hand-crafted just for you.

How worried should we be?
It’s game on! But huge uncertainty.
What can we expect? Something
Unlimited and right up to date.
When the film stops, you see streams of lights.

Well, it does more or less right now.
These extravagant wavelengths; the mirror
Those incomprehensible structures.
This is a blind spot so take care.
The distant trees are not what they seem.
Just listen to that smoochy saxophone;
It’s a class act but just camouflage
Really more like a lap-dancing stag night
Than a floral tribute in dream rotation.
Thank you, enjoy!

Inside The Silent City

Inside The Silent City:
Stunning new rebel reserves on red alert.
Omega Lightning, Flicka Vee and Candy Flash
Scanned a crystal ball in the atrium, looking for comic turns,
High Street visions, Jet-Age babes, various venues forgotten.
Then, beyond our mono-rail vanishing point, they see
An aurora scuba squeeze; the counter-turn is
The function of the antistrophe, said Omega, but
You can do the splits, whispered Candy.
The others just laughed.

‘Hello, Honey Cake,
Your smile deserves a fire exit
Your flair deserves a face-off
Your entrance deserves a phone-call
Your horizon deserves a festival
Your tattoo deserves a Pinot Noir’.

Rave arcade inflatable meltdown freak-fest
Collective sequinned jacket, snake-hips fire
Still burns – few surprises, high-flipping brides.
She just went for a shabby exterior, then a fractal cadenza,
And then some of the coolest frocks around this crystal breeze
Of shaky, amateur footage and smiles powered by
Our three intrepid explorers, in Technicolour.
This is the Ghost Spa in The Silent City,
Where nothing ever happens, not ever.
No two ways about it.

Poetry Is Radar

for A.C. Evans

Poetry is radar and I am off the map.

History was a stretch of wall running from
source to estuary, crossing the boundaries
between public and private spheres,
the restricted vectors of media outlets.

The inhabitants of the square erupted
in applause at images of bombs dropping
into the airshaft, destroying the archaeology
of knowledge along with the newspaper stand.
Former meaning went silent and cold.

Panoptic spaces work best in panoptic time,
they affect the whole system, whether
you like it or not. The interesting questions
are these: Are there new ways of playing
the role of the engaged intellectual poet?

Is refusal a turning away from our strange
fascination with watching and listening to stories?
Contradictory answers or refusal to respond
might be classed as insolence or insubordination.
Let us linger in the cold embrace of computers

and the dazzle of freely improvised fictions,
before travelling to ambiguity and vacillation
in the application of narrative law, bursting forth
with a flood of posters, meetings and publications.
Geography is virtual, literature is dead, poetry

is radar and that does not permit a simple
juxtaposition of interests or independence
of the working class. Do poets work? I hope
not. The enchanted world of literature, text
and storytelling exists despite itself. We name,

define, index and narrate, try to interfere
with the flow of information, gaze into mirrors
at a false and dangerous image of ourselves.
A hundred flowers bloomed, a thousand lovers
sighed; we lost our identities in the process

and critical information in the mix. Confronted
by questions and small green blips on the screen
we must follow the flow of information and power.
Perhaps it is time to construct a discourse,
time to experiment and be held responsible?

Readers uninterested in abstract or speculative
modes of writing about the event may want
to skip this poem and meet me later in the pub.
The logistics of perception exist only to present
the sublime, come with a built in point-of-view

and a small instruction manual; poetry and stories
exist only to render human what has become
inhuman. Whilst we cannot grasp the unknown,
we can connect to the sudden guest appearances
of language in our world, the autodestruction

of faith as it is replaced with a positive feedback
loop that will propel us through our own limits
into life’s muddy depths. We must no longer seek
equilibrium, must improvise out of time and space,
learn to embrace the everyday logic of events.

Where The Vanished City Stood

Then where the vanished city stood, towering
Above the Plain of Knives, we saw a shimmering
Transformation. The mist-shrouded desert land
Shuddered and quaked in delirious agony, summoning
Ancient, fearful terrors from beyond the wall,
Beyond the limitations of human thought or wonder;
Obscene, gigantic, disintegrating, multidimensional
Fleshless avatars of torment – such unnatural
Emblazoned monsters from an abyss of unknown malice.

Hyperdrive Experience

Pop-up productions
Metropolis Paradise
High speed, high level transit systems
Man on high wire mimics the human condition
Flick on the lights
Reduce radar signature
Are we ready?
London calling from outer space.
Turn on the telly for a drama with a baying mob of rioters
And a bunch of shouty Northern slags ‘avin’ a right go’
At the Sloppy South where everything is cushy not like ‘ere
And all that stuff
Looking for serenity?
Phone ‘em up ask: what’s the story?
Are we ready?
Light up the radar
This is Metropolis Paradise where the fun never stops
You’ve seen it on the telly
Like this bimbo presents the weather
And – I couldn’t take my eyes off you,
You high level twister
You flower of my youth,
You sassy starlet.

You’re a hyperdrive experience,
You’re a sign of the times,
In this time of signs,

In this electronic paradise.

Ghost Elements

 I. OF THIS WE MUST

Of this we must and of this we should and of this we might and this we shouldn’t:
the possibilities are endless and open to all kinds of interpretation and misuse.
They turn into those eraser shavings and then you swipe them off your desk
and they land on the floor and someone steps on them and they stick on their shoe.
Of this we should and of this we might and of this we must and of this we shouldn’t,
and now because his family are upset we must all sign their petition to keep him
in a service that we do not even know he is happy about. We recognize the need,
yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications for us all.

 II. THIS IS NOT HERE
The power went out in my whole neighbourhood and then this light appeared in the sky,
invisible to teachers and parents: on this wonderful day, a star of pure love appeared
to be my gift… I'm not speculating about the future, this is the reality here today;
sometimes we have to do a little dance before they open the gates or windows
and it's not going to happen again. The refrigerator will keep food for about four days
as long as you don’t open the door once the power has gone. There are other options.
One is that a breaker tripped but the handle didn't move, the other that you are
obviously holding on to certain secrets. This can be checked by gently pressing on.

 III. AND THIS APPEARED
If you see something every day it will eventually manifest in your life. A dream
is your creative vision for your life in the future, but one was more faded
than the other. What does this mean? I agreed to have my machine upgraded
and concluded that these mutations do not appear to have a detrimental effect
on virus fitness or economic and policy considerations. We can’t allow evil
into our lives, but we should still pray and hope for peace and righteousness.
Nor dare we make ourselves partners in their devilish ranting. This is a story
not to tell the kids. Stuff like this needs to be taken somewhere else.

IV. SEE YOUR VISION

The luminous landscape is something you can see in your mind’s eye;
you can understand what you are doing when you are retraining your senses.
Improving your vision is a matter of changing the habitual way you see:
by using your peripheral vision you are using more rod cells, when trying to see
try not to look directly at the places you are trying to see. As you get older
your sight weakens and becomes more like meditation or yoga. It is what we see,
and also the way in which we see. It's time people used commonsense.
Our vision is all about holding the vibration and designing infrastructure.

From Outside

From Outside: a selection of poems from 2006-2011… a few blank stanzas and a handful of quasi open-field ‘verses’ or texts; some quite short, some even longer… a subliminal, tabloid-impressionist, post-surreal, eye-popping 3D parody…a pastiche in cut-up fold-around psychic collage style; hard-edged minimal or sentimental snapshots of cinematic moments on Bling Street, scratched images from films we have never seen. A poetic of the Absurd: the anomalous elements are ‘found phrases’ and chance occurrences. The magic ingredient is peripheral vision. On the upper deck of the last bus home, Des and Shona find that just sometimes poetry can be too much like real life, as when on some far away planet the uniforms from Starfleet Command take all the best tables like its some boogie lounge send-up of Casablanca, set in a glitzy stopping-off place en route to the Boo Galaxy. True enough, you think, thought can be deadly here, and news just in echoes our unconscious desires, our pain and loss, or our nostalgia for unrequited love as Shona murmured ‘forever is a word I hated’. They glide through a shadowy dystopian landscape of misty, crepuscular parks, burnt out buildings, a distant tree-line, empty streets, ancient deserts, ‘zones’, wrought iron, old houses, misty overgrown gardens, vacant rooms, and virtual spaces, where ruins embody the scrambled mind of my caricature madness, where a mirror windows-out onto a dizzy gulf of intimate recollection; of cosmic genesis, of an evaporating universe, of a hyper-cultural eschatology. Today, demons and angels sing from the same hymn sheet. From Outside takes place at ‘the borders of the future’, where a solitary cyborg with metal arms stands sadly waiting for another client; where distracted mannequins communing with ‘emissaries from another dimension’ stare from shattered shop windows. Where the ghost of a slinky jazz singer in a silver dress still haunts a deserted dancehall forever lost in a dream-loop of the Nineteen Forties. Where the Skylon towers over utopian pleasure gardens in 1951, where electronic supergroup Neutrino Subway belts out metal classics in a scene of mirror-ball madness from Miami Vice, and where a cabaret fan dancer dances for herself alone in front of an invisible audience. All those awesome fashionistas! They look just like aliens with big eyes and skinny arms – but this is also a time when the dictator rules through television and flickering screens reveal an alternative world or labyrinth of worlds. The final destination is a non-event horizon: pixels splatter the wall. Here is poetry for the Muses of Aldebaran, and those other disquieting Muses who escaped the Secret Mountain to ‘stalk the world in human form’. From Outside is for the existential outsider ‘the thinker’ who calmly observes the goings-on out here on The Western Fringes, or in the extremely mysterious Selhurst Triangle. The dramatis personae is a cast of mad performers, misfits, hick comediennes, mutants, celebs, ghosts, undercover agents, hot singles and the Eternal Bride from the Large Glass where dust breeds in a cold light. The tutelary deity is pale-faced Hypnos, guardian of desperate poets and ‘you’ (the invisible companion) or, perhaps, ‘you’ (the reader) relaxing on an old park bench, watched over by hunched black birds. Watch your body glow in the dark while dreaming.

From Outside is available as an e-book at The Argotist Online (ed Jeffrey Side)

On Some Faraway Planet

On Some Faraway Planet

Funky Space at the Boogie Lounge

Amplify your visuals, get connected, go anywhere.
Hot metal, new leather, fishnet crop tops
Scalp electrodes connect us to fashion dreams
When, after a grey and misty start,
The future merges with yesterday’s news
And mirror ball madness vamps up your eyes
All table dancing, flirting and catfights
At a burlesque cabaret in a downtown cellar
On some far away planet a long way from home
Where raffish grid girls wear suede retro hot pants
And alien entertainers swoop from the chandeliers
Yeah, it’s love, lipgloss and show business
Out here on the Western Fringes, so it’s
Another teen slasher bloodbath from Mr Pink
As Starfleet Command takes all the tables
Calling for posh totty, sentimental songs
And two pianos on wheels of steel,
Like this sex bomb in specs adds some oomph
To her scary cocktail shaker routine
Behind the bar on the seventh floor where
Snap happy space cadets preen in their frocks
Flicking ciggie stubs across the room
At some hick comedienne from The Big Squirm
Too boring darling I hear you say.
Where’s that pause button?
No wet shirt moments here then, just armchair
Radicals, Mr White, some other geezer
And a crystal breeze chilling the action, while
Sporting a smarter class of clobber,
Mohair suits and electric boots,
We truffle shuffle to a plinky dinky soundtrack.
You lucky, lucky people!

Several Sonnets

Stephane Mallarme

Several Sonnets 1883-1887

I

When the shadow menaces with its fatal law
A particular old Dream, desire and evil of my vertebrae,
Afflicted at dying beneath funereal ceilings
It folds within me its indubitable wing.

Luxury, o hall of ebony where, to seduce a king
Ceremonial garlands writhe in death,
You are nothing but mendacious hubris uttered by shadows
In the eyes of a hermit dazzled by his faith.

Yes, I know that in the distances of this night, The Earth
Emits a giant flare extraordinary mystery
Beneath the hideous centuries that darken it the less.

Space like unto itself whether it expands or contracts
Unfurls in this boredom vile fires for witnesses
That a festive star has illuminated its genius

II

The virgin, the everlasting and beautiful today
Will it shatter for us with a drunken wing beat
The hard, forgotten lake haunted beneath frost
By the transparent glacier of flights not taken!

A swan of previous times recalls it is he who
Magnificent but hopeless surrenders himself
For not having sung the place of living
When sterile winter’s ennui gleamed.

All his neck will shake off that white agony
By space inflicted on the bird which negates,
But not the horror of plumage ensnared on the ground.

Phantom assigned here by his pure light,
He is paralysed in a cold dream of disdain
Assumed in useless exile The Swan.

III

Victoriously fled the beautiful suicide
Firebrand of glory, spume of blood, gold, storm!
Oh laugh if down there a purple spreads
To cover royally my absent tomb.

What! Of this flare not even a gleam
Remains, it is midnight, in the shadow celebrating us
Except that a head’s presumptive treasure
Tumbles its nonchalant caress without a torch

Yours as always the delight! Yours
Yes alone retaining from dissolved skies
A residue of puerile triumph rimmed

With light as you lay it on the cushions
Like the war-helmet of a girl-empress
From which to depict you cascade roses.

IV

Raised high her pure nails dedicate their onyx
Anguish, this midnight upholds her lampadophore
And many vesperal dreams burned by the Pheonix
Are Never gathered in any cinerary amphora

On the tables, in the empty salon: nul ptyx
Abolished trinket of sonorous emptyness
(For The Master has gone gathering tears in The Styx
With this solitary object that bestows honour on The Void)

But near a vacant north window, a gold
Expires complementing perhaps the décor
Of unicorns kicking fire towards a nixie,

She, defunct, naked in the mirror, while
In the abyss bordered by the frame, are fixed
So soon, the scintillations of The Seven Stars.

translated by AC 1996-1999

Sonnet IV, the first truly hermetic poem by Stephane Mallarme,  is also known as the 'Sonnet en X' (first version 1866)

Then Interior

Deranged but lost thinking
Open, this

Earth so near oceans
Green/white
Fleshy petals soft stalk
Spines
Your pain then interior
Words
Diverging patterns away

Quick still head down
Red/yellow
Clear near water close

Open, this
Awake away, time estranged.

A Walk On The Beach

A Walk On The Beach

We’re in remarkable company (festival chic
Luxurious mascara, tight white jeans)
Turn on tune in fall off the edge of the fairground
Summer beauty limited edition lost highway
Variation on a modern classic theme:
Got the looks? Got the moves?
Come for a walk on the beach
With me…

They don’t
– they can’t
– have everything
Your opinions are superfluous
Lose yourself (in one or two takes or
A glass house with resident beautician)
Feel the heat remove unwanted hair
All over the place, kill your pet rat or
Smash a pink ceramic piggy bank;
With oodles of vintage bubbly we
Rehabilitate ‘the sport of fashion’.
Just waiting for a response –
Rollicking in Santa Cruz or somewhere
In London, dream streets away from
All those ghastly types in denim jackets

Turn on tune in fall off the edge of the fairground

Undercover and/or over ground at some arty show
Where they all hang out, finding just the right beat
Discussing the latest debauchery, taking it
All to a new level on a gorgeous isle far from here
Where there are just too many reasons,
Just too many corridors – and far too many stories.

Turn on tune in fall off the edge of the fairground

Waiting in the wings for another new friend
To seduce with something truly precious and

We don’t mind the not-so-distant future…

Suddenly the dining-room doors opened…

Turn on tune in fall off the edge… where
The horizon meets the sea.

Stray Sunlight

Stray Sunlight

Because of our dreams we like to shine,
In our sparkly suits and velvet silence,

And yet, my friends, this is an understanding
That nothing is deeper than nothing:

Eye-popping skulls, poetry of the absurd,
Stray sunlight gleaming, diffuse halo.

Your true thoughts are so deadly,
I dare not write them here.
