Deathmasques

Deathmasques is a collection of early writings: a few prose poems and tales from 1970-1973.

The prose poems comprised six pieces: 'The Poet' (1970), 'No More Beauty' (1971), 'In the Palace of The Sphinx (The Supplicant)' (1972), 'Dream of Stone' (1972), 'Into The Abyss (The Renegade)' (1972) and 'Silence' (1973).
One felt that the prose poem was a particularly Decadent form. Also included were two macabre short stories 'Mute Witness' (1972) and 'We Vampires' (1972). Other texts from this period include chunks of experimental neo-gothic or modern fantastic fiction (mainly dreadful!) and various quasi-theoretical statements relating to art projects such as Crisis of the Object and Rictus Sardonicus.
Deathmasques story 'We Vampires' appeared in the anthology Haunting Tales (2008) and 'Mute Witness' from the same collection appeared in Monomyth # 44 Issue 8.2 (2008) both from Atlantean Publishing.

Life Into Shape

The burnt out trees will leave you cold…
 – Beth Orton

At that moment, when I thought I was about to die, I saw my entire life unravel. It was an indistinct vision, a split second in time. Can I describe the shape of my life as I saw it then, at that moment?
The starting point, the point of departure, as it were, was a Point – I saw a microscopic, metallic point lost in a black void.
Is it possible to call a point a shape?
Should I think of this point as a complex entity, like a trefoil icosahedron or a Medusa-like tangle of helical forms unwinding through time? Undoubtedly the split-second itself was The Point, the horizon of infinity enclosed in time by perception.
Within the temporality of that second, as it split asunder, the point unfolded, unfurling with agonising slowness. It would be very tempting to describe this monadic point as a tessellated surface of Celtic spirals. Perhaps it was a multifaceted crystal, its flat walls conforming to the laws of low energy directions, or even a gold crystal with a pitted surface like that of Saturn’s moon Iapetus. Yet, in close up, this entity (my life) appeared more like a donut of magnetic fluid.
However, I knew that this was an illusion and, being the extrapolation of mathematical co-ordinates derived from my imagination, it would mutate into a web-like form, a network, each node a scintilla generated by the primal departure point itself. The majority of these secondary points represented co-ordinates outside the narrow parameters of the linear time-line of my ‘life’ as understood on a mundane, day-to-day basis. This web extended beyond the antechamber of memory, encompassing ancestral events and unconscious experiences, producing patterns very different from the past-present-future trajectory of the arrow of time.
If the synchronic shape of my life is a light-cone of consciousness, then the diachronic shape of my life is the broad-leafed arrow of time, emerging from womb-darkness, vanishing into darkness beyond the grave. But the multidimensional shape of my life is this network of co-ordinates.
Looking more closely at the filamentous matrix, it was clear that some scintilla had a reddish hue while others were ice-blue. The red points signified moments of pain or negative emotion such as – for example – crises during critical illnesses, times of bereavement, early nightmares and several road accidents (including this one). The few ice-blue points represented instances of clarity. The vast majority of nodes were of neutral, indeterminate, off-white complexion.
I looked in vain for lights indicating moments of passion, for the centre of desire is a Black Hole from which, as we all know, light cannot escape.
At this moment my perception of the multiform shape of my ‘life’ registered another change and the fascinating web mutated yet again.

The resolution of the image degraded. Black turned to white and the interlaced network changed into a vision of bare branches: burnt out trees, stark against a greying sky.

The Dream Collector

1. Dragged up the stairs of accident and damage towards the broken concrete fortress, you stick your head through the broken tiles and collect what was left behind at school: dinosaurs, educational television, twigs for fingers when you couldn't write.

2. Put your dolls aside and face up to the day. Your family is a series of cut-out figures hidden in the forest and who knows what else might emerge? Always the shadow memory of moments from your past, the echoing cathedral of endurance.

3. You see faces in the rain and imagine riding a carousel horse away from the rotting and discarded now. The glass is always broken and missing, there are always steps and ladders to climb. There is no way out of everybody's dreams.

Beyond The Dream Screen

A time will come when we are nothing but a memory haunting the dreams and nightmares of some superior species.

This future race will inhabit our planet (no longer called Earth) and live in perfect ecological balance: adjusted to the world, the cosmos, nature and all living creatures. A tenuous memory will be the sole flaw in existence:

MAN… unconscious origin of perturbed sleep, subtle agent of demoralization – what a destiny!

Uncanny Valley

Ecstatic submission a blunt weapon but it doesn’t matter.

Instrument supplier almost human ‘delight’ is the only word replacing missing oxygen breaking in suddenly feels innocent as kicking a ball around a coaxial cylinder we suspect the curse of rotten luck in the pathological sense, a developmental abnormality. How long have you got?

Light conversation about plant fluid failure mechanisms. Solar cells weekly to your hotel room where everything you see, hear, feel and think is controlled specifically on demand, by voluntary agreement thanks to ‘uncanny valley’ effect magnetic maps robot faces no strangers to getting bogged down – or a run for their money. “Means this is no longer the case, will boost resistance slightly forward kissing device can visualise clusters of information phosphorescent rainforests dominated by high towers improve intimacy, enhancing bubblegum fun”. A hideous atonal nursery rhyme eerily futuristic. Have you got how long?

It doesn’t end there.

Techniques based on a smooth plastic casing outlive universe regular repeating patterns due to contact with additional elastic boundary state, a grip that is firm but gentle. You can say it's only recently (sad though it is) as we slip through a doorway into an antique coffee bar where we lounge around using the technology at our disposal like the microbes in your home. True only in the past few years constantly coming into contact with a sorry state of affairs. Collateral damage like social evidence for the record or a Stone Age equivalent of celebrity culture perhaps they were just having a lark. You got long have you? Drop talking eerily futuristic enhancing death and hideous atonal nursery of rhymes and ecstatic submission.

This tangle far from random now surrounded by artificial pharmaceuticals and other complex products of rational design. We don’t understand the details, the chemical dance, the pros and cons from illness and death inducing disgust with subtle influences the hairdresser was girlishly thrilled and the sparks fly from day one. Exactly what it is she wants, this blow wave alien from LV-426, savage celebrations single mum takes on a transparent cube comedy sequel set at a chic high class New York party in a partial vacuum perhaps. Long got how have you?

So, looking back or looking ahead. From Toulouse to limbo from too cool to calypso deadpan delivery a spine tingling tale something unexpected and unsettling a poignant verse an old enemy plunges briskly into the action a disguised morality lesson with emotional complications discovered their partners were having an affair in the same plane crash. Have you?

Many things reeking if they so choose, when feeling for instance a pale shadow affecting every thing long term. Power hungry sculptures further north capture pages turning in the confessional all first rate equipment and support agreed leading to fight against passion where they are still having problems even now winging their way to us polluting our waterways, climbing mountains, dancing and dining out?

Beyond Surreal II

Strange contours on the radar, Secret lab deep in the countryside, Technicians in white coats.
On the blink again, sir
What is it?
Dunno, sir, it’s beyond me,
Picture not perfect. Colour errors continue,
It’s beyond surreal,
A cruel story, the sins of youth. What really rocks this starlet?
It was due to the sloppy production schedule, she said, gagging for some action,
Toying with her easy-fit waistband extenders and her magnetic bracelets worn for sitting or standing
At the console, (a superb luxury machine, finished in brushed silver).
Set the alarm and wake up with a perfectly timed analogue face.
Touch and glow!
She certainly did, but preferred shopping in bargain basements with sinister mercenaries from a distant galaxy. The bookies rarely get these things wrong.
We hang on as we look to bounce back into real time, and the good thing is there are no more odds and ends
But we can still hit the headlines with this
Grisly slash-fest mashup filmed by viewers as two stoned pot smokers drift into range
Zap! Ultimate in snug comfort.
Keep your hands warm, I begged her as she took up her spoke shave balsa stripper,
Ready for playing among the stars. As if that was not enough!
We can break new ground with this inner landscape,
You’ll be amazed.
We slipped along between the floating solar-powered string lights – Not sure who’s at the door?
Eyes as hard as steel she unleashed a satirical puppet show and lashed out with mind-blowing super-fonic vocals; I’m so filthy filthy you’ll explode in seconds! She screamed.
It was a team of Manhattan-based scientists, a mother-and-daughter set-up with conflicting views about the future, huh. Well, that fractured our rampant ultra-hard obscure zombie cannibal death trip B-movie cover story, haunted by a cordless chiming doorbell in fact, a sonic deterrent to deal with lane huggers and interstellar tailgaters
Don’t forget the accessories! Brilliant!

Strange Evil Flowers

Rogue metal guerrilla movements migrated to London, like strange evil flowers from a dark lake where nothing is sane, nothing is safe. Super-handy extra free gift wrap-around sunglasses water-effect solar cherubs, pinching and cramping instant easy look add wheels to a vibrant kaftan. Yes, the underside has special suction cups and slip-resistant grippers simply apply before bedtime for a lot of extra style.
Attracts dust like a magnet. Close-up view, flip down, turn about use to protect your identity while your lower body stays in place accept no responsibility perfect for poached diamond dust repel pests forget the frustrations turn it over. Speak rhythmically in rhyming couplets or folk chants.
A Roman flash dance and a cheering crowd in tune with some really beautiful things, a crucial contribution from a maverick mathematician suddenly able to talk. The ideas were brilliant, like some far-out ultra-violent comic book metropolis, dominating the media or some psychotic nemesis. Camp body action involving ape-men and pterodactyls. Unrest and crumbling consensus guaranteed to make you laugh cry puke and develop a nose for drama - don’t miss out on dangerous art oblivious of every level of reality, is there any stopping us?

Alchemy Of The Mirage

Thematic symbols atomise, scattering trace elements across a light-sensitive plate hovering between your eyes and your hands

Now in the elemental darkness alien storms shatter a mirror ball into a thousand winged fragments

Bright vision suddenly, in a trance, you can see across tracks of time – satin finish, clear droplets – alchemy of the mirage

The Atom Smasher Of Dreams

To find the ultimate element of desire a team using Attention Theory and a temperature high enough to mimic conditions when the universe was just microseconds old have found our most recent dreams follow a mathematical vortex pattern.
Quarks loop through these vortices, even though shot pacing isn’t everything – good narrative, strong acting and a fireball about four trillion kelvin at its core, are probably more important. This is just the way you dream about far-away places, old girlfriends and alien cities built by insects. Later this year researchers will separate lower energies, helping to describe the human attention-span when dreaming about the future.
Is life a mathematical trick? That is exactly what the more negatively charged entities would like us to think. They expect the separation to disappear but we have seen signs of such vortices and fields created by gluons that can twist, forming dreamlike structures in the all-pervasive vacuum of space. This is what gives mass and substance to lurid, inhuman fantasies.
Perhaps the key lies in measuring desire with greater precision, although we now think that psychic films are more gripping because they resonate with other movies, not your memories. You may try to copy the style, but the galaxies will collide anyway. Explosions can create a series of waves, transforming the magnitude of ‘pink noise’ at random intersections in the brain – a property that has never been seen before. Others have observed the vortex in music, street fashion and air turbulence. This type of dream field should cause two particles to collide off-centre, smashing gold and copper ions head-on like a slow motion car crash in the Valley of Despair, tracking the eye-movements of dreamers like jets of matter expelled from backward spinning black holes.
Mutations are locked in and several different kinds of fantasy arise, helping to explain all kinds of non-material phenomena.
Always leave space for magnetic fields to build up in your dream life.
Never look back.
